Farragut Elementary School Art Department (FF 2minutes 28 seconds)
Debra
has been teaching art for 4 years, both part time and full time at several schools including Saint Bernard's Central
Catholic High School, Sullivan Middle School and Belmont Community School as contracted by the Worcester Art Museum, the St.
Bridget Elementary School, and most recently at the Farragut Elementary School in Culver City, CA. She made her career change
from graphic design shortly after beginning teaching part time at WAM in 2004, becoming a certified teacher of Visual Art,
grades 5-12. During her time at Saint Bernard's, she has taught Arts I, II, III, and IV, to grades 9-12, and
also prepared a curriculum for Italian Art & Culture, an art history and culture appreciation course. At STB, her
experience included addressing Arts I-IV in a single class period, teaching each level simultaneously through scheduling
demonstrations and introductions at different times so that all students were continuously engaged whether designing,
sketching, completing projects, or critiquing. She is experienced in teaching all levels of students in various
media, including pencil, charcoal, pastel, oil pastel, watercolor, acrylic, tempera, printmaking, ceramics, multi-media, computer
graphics, sculpture, pen & ink, and much more. In the summer of 2006, Debra was invited to hold an art day camp
at Saint Bernard's. Studio partner Dominic Quagliozzi and Debra co-founded Camp DestinationART, a week-long
art day camp for ages 5-13. At the Worcester Art Museum, Debra has taught a range of age
groups, concentrating primarily on the middle school ages as well as grades 3-5 at the Belmont Community School through
the Worcester Public Schools After School Enrichment Program. Here, Debra has taught a range of experience levels
in various media, centered around the themes, Art Around the World, and Visual Literacy.
Teaching Philosophy
Debra's basic philosophies of education have stemmed
from her experiences as a young teacher. "Mostly, I believe that everyone in their own way is an artist,
and that all students must be allowed the opportunity to create, think freely, express, and learn. Art is for everyone,
and is everyone; its mysteries must be unlocked before it can be understood." Teaching students what art
is, how it evolved, and what it can be, is an extremely valuable tool for young members of our cultured society.
Art is a mirror of many subjects; math, science, music, language, philosophy, religion, sociology, and most of all history.
It is fundamental that students recognize this mirror as well as art's role in the interrelation of subjects and people.
The impact of art on a young person's life is most profound when a studentsrealizes that art is truly the beauty of expressing
one's own unique vision of the world.
